  1. I have read the story and I suppose that Paul acts awkwardly, he is obsessed with the wooden horse or hobbyhorse he long ago outgrew. It clearly shows he is stuck in childhood. Childhood understood as a strong bond between mother and son. A bond that demands commitment on the part of the son who is seeking desperately for motherly affection. He got the money to please his mother. This is what comes to my mind now... then, I have to order the ideas. INTERESTING STORY, REALLY TO REFLECT UPON. I´VE ENJOYED IT.

  2. Besides, it comes as no surprise that this story had been written by LAWRENCE, who had an unhealthy relationship with his mother as shown in his famous novel: "Sons and lovers"

  3. In my opinion the mother is selfish and doesn't care about her family, in fact, she admits that she doesn't love her children. What is more, she is constantly thinking about new things in order to keep up a style, which she and her family can't afford.
Her son could feel this and started hearing whisperings which said "there must be more money", some time later he told his mother that he was lucky. He starts worrying about her mother and suddenly he has luck with races, he wons a lot of money gambling...
He gives that money to his mother in order for her to pay her debts but instead of doing it she spends it in expensive furniture and things for her house...
This makes her son try to win more money and as a consequence he gets ill and die.
