THE MYTH OF PYGMALION

Think about the following roles:

1) Pygmalion the ruler (Sam)
2) Pygmalion the artist (Grisell)
3) Pygmalion the lover (Gisela)
4) Pygmalion the worshipper (Daniela)

Identify these roles in Professor Higgins

  1. 2) Pygmalion the artist: We can see that according to the myth Pygmalion was a very talented sculptor who couldn't find a perfect woman so he decided to build a marble statue of the perfect woman for him. As regards Professor Higgins, is the same case. Professor Higgins thought that no woman was good for him until he finds a flower girl that was poorly educated and couldn't speak well. As he was a phonetics teacher he starts by teaching her how to speak correctly, after that he clothes her as a lady and by doing this he creates his perfect woman. So we can say that he was an artist since he created a completely different person of the flower girl.

  2. Pygmalion's admiration for his own sculpture turned to love and called her his wife.
He gave the statue a name: "Galatea", meaning "sleeping love'.
