Realism in fiction- Charles Dickens

Dickens was aware of many of the social problems of his day and wrote to call attention to them. As you read, think about the following questions:

• If you were a writer, what social problems would you want to call attention to today?

• How else might you call attention to today’s social issues?

  1. I think I would write about extremely poor areas, their problems and reality, children living on the street or children being made to work by parents. I think that a novel dealing with such issues would call atention for itself. In my opinion most people would like it, and others wouldn`tbecause it would be just like watching the news with a pint of fiction.

  2. I would like to call attention to lack of education and how this affects the future of some poor teenagers who are uneducated and take drugs. I consider education the key to solve the problem of insecurity in our country.

  3. I would like to complain about children and teenagers who live in shantytowns or poor areas and who are not looked after by their parents or their parents don't care at all about themselves. I think that it would be a good topic to discuss because we as teachers are all the time complaining about our students but after all we don't know everything they have to go through and why they behave in that way.
